Dancecast Meets Stance on Dance

Stance on Dance is trying something new: podcasts! Silva Laukkanen recently launched a dance podcast series called Dancecast, which explores dance in non-traditional contexts. Emmaly Wiederholt (Stance on Dance’s fair editor) reached out to Silva to ask if she’d like to share Dancecast on Stance on Dance. To Emmaly’s delight, Silva said yes! And to kick off the collaboration, Silva suggested Emmaly be the first interview. The two ladies discussed why dance dialogue is important, what is traditional versus non-traditional dance, the value of technique, and so much more.

In the next couple weeks, Silva will be sharing a podcast series with dance artists working with people who are incarcerated, so stay tuned!

During a chance opportunity to teach at a rehabilitation center in her native Finland, Silva Laukkanen was reminded of the transformative power of movement and, because of this experience, she decided to re-focus her career on community and mixed-ability dance.  A certified DanceAbility instructor since 2003, she has given workshops in Finland and England for mixed age and ability groups, including a two-year stint teaching for the Finnish mixed ability company Magic Dance. Silva holds a BFA in dance from The North Karelia College of Outokumpu and a post graduate degree in community dance from The Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK. She currently lives in Austin, TX and works for Body Shift.
