The Bunion: Helgi Goes RAW!

The Garage is moving! San Francisco’s favorite underground venue, directed by the notorious Joe Landini, is leaving its home at 975 Howard for 715 Bryant. And in honor of the Garage’s new home, San Francisco Ballet should inaugurate the space with Helgi Tomasson completing a Resident Artist Workshop. Yep, that’s right, Helgi should go RAW.

Anyone who has ever been unfortunate enough to let their precious little address or phone number slip into SF Ballet’s grasp has been subjected to a barrage of phone calls and mailings begging for money. Hell, in the last program they even asked to be considered in your will! SF Ballet never seems to have enough dough.

Well here’s a solution for SF Ballet’s artistic director and principal choreographer: RAW, the Garage’s twelve-week residency program which gives choreographers free rehearsal and performance space.  What more could any artist in need of resources want? And obviously SF Ballet is in need of resources.

Perhaps a remake of Don Quixote? Thirty-two fortes on the Garage’s loud floor? Thump thump thump! Or perhaps something along the lines of Le Corsaire? Thirty-two girls in big puffy tutus stuffed into a black box? It can be called “Ballet in a Box.”

Through RAW, Helgi can feature a new work (of course featuring Yuan Yuan Tan) with no charge to anyone! Just let those snazzy patrons know the bathroom is behind the stage. And yes, they can enjoy $3 beer and wine while they watch the show.

Totally correct about SFB always asking for $$$. I think they currently have something in access of $70 million in their endowment. And exactly what is a required donation? Maybe you can ask Mr. Tomasson during his tenure at The Garage. Of course he may not know because I’m sure that have a staff for that type of thing.
