Memory, Place, and the Joy of Discovery

The following illustrations are by Dagmar Shaw and were published in the spring/summer 2026 print publication of Stance on Dance. Enjoy!

An expressive painting depicts a ballet dancer in a flowing blue tutu posed gracefully against a textured, abstract background of muted earth tones and brushstrokes.

Artist Statement:

My art is shaped by a life of movement, observation, and curiosity. Growing up in Germany and the United States, I learned to see the world through shifting landscapes and cultures. Creating became my way of grounding myself and expressing what words couldn’t hold.

Largely self‑taught, I work intuitively, guided by color, texture, and emotion. Living in New Mexico has deepened my connection to light, space, and the quiet stories found in everyday moments. Each piece reflects an inner dialogue between memory, place, and the joy of discovery.

A delicate watercolor illustration shows two flowing, blue-dressed figures holding hands mid-spin on a soft, muted background of warm earth tones.

Dagmar Shaw was born in Hamburg, Germany, and immigrated to the United States at age 10. Largely self‑taught, she has pursued the arts throughout her life, drawing early influence from ballet and a deep appreciation for movement and form. After settling in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she earned her degree from the University of New Mexico and became an active member of the local arts community. She is affiliated with Rainbow Artists and the Rio Grande Art Association, and her work has been shown at The Gallery ABQ, Maple Street Dance Space, and various other venues.
