Measure the Music: Bjork’s “I Remember You”
By Jake Padilla
Given its rubato nature we should disregard the measure number.
In Italian “rubato” means “robbed” as in,
robbed from the structure of tempo to liberally feel the space,
each harmony to its own accord. And singing like no one’s there.
(in your own space it’s easiest to try new things)
(in your own space it’s easiest to collect your thoughts)
However this is one of the most purposeful phrases in the song.
Sometimes there’s no need to try it a new way.
Sometimes you just know what to say.
