What’s in July’s Flask?

Jake and Ryan love watching dance. They can’t get enough. Every month they plan their calendar around their favorite upcoming shows. But in order to ease the tension and get into the mood, they also bring a cocktail catered to that specific performance. So what’s in July’s flask?

Daria Kaufman-

“Channels: an evening of cross-disciplinary performance,” unravels communication barriers and explores states of impermanence.

DRINK SELECTION: Jake doesn’t know why but his gut tells him 7&7 (7-Up and whiskey), while Ryan definitely needs something with an unexpected kick… a Washington Apple (Crown, Apple Pucker and Cranberry – heavy on the crown, thank you).

Fri-Sat, Jul 6-7, 8pm, $10-20, Shotwell Studios, 3252-A 19th St, SF

WERK-

“WERK It Out,” showcases the work of choreographers Alyce Finwall, Tanya Bello, Christine Bonansea, Minna Harri, Michelle Fletcher, and Malinda LaVelle over three different programs.

Yikes! This means two flasks per show!

Thu-Sun, Jul 19-22, 8pm, $25-60, ODC Theater, 3153 17th St, SF, 415-863-9834

PROGRAM 1

Alyce Finwall Dance Theater-

“Angel”, a tightly constructed dance piece, inhabits a quiet, dark and mysterious room.

DRINK SELECTION: The lighting is apt and Jake feels contemplative just reading the program notes… Bloody Mary. After reading the name of the performance, Ryan’s first thought is something soft and sweet.  Bahama Mama Baby!  However, after further consideration he might want a Bacardi 151 floater. (Rum, Coconut Rum, Grenadine, Orange and Pineapple Juice).

Tanya Bello’s Project B-

“Sol y Sombra” is a series of vignettes on the nature of reality in both its harsh and beautiful extremes.

DRINK SELECTION: Ryan heads straight for the John Daly aka The Arnold Palmer with vodka (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade, vodka, crushed ice please). Jake’s reminded of an old love… ahhh Paloma, a Margarita made with white grapefruit juice.

PROGRAM 2

Christine Bonansea-

“No Exit” offers a visually thrilling study of a triangular relationship marked by unrequited desire, cruelty, and suffering.

DRINK SELECTION: Ryan’s one thought is Absinthe. But if there’s trouble getting that Jager will have to do because no exit means no turning back. Jake on the other hand seizes the opportunity to try something new…how about a Love Potion No. 9?

4 part(s) Ice Cream (Chocolate)
3 part(s) Sauza Silver Tequila
1 part(s) Dekyuper Razzmataz

Good luck washing out your flask afterward, heh!

Minna Harri-

“Dead/Alive” is as much about death and dying as it is a celebration of life and community.

DRINK SELECTION: Jake’s going with a Flirtini! You only live once! Ryan opts for a Whiskey Peach Smash (Whiskey, simple syrup, lemon and peach slices – just shake over ice and pour into flask).

PROGRAM 3

Michelle Fletcher’s Here/Now Dance Collective-

“BURSTNOW – A Valediction to your Rampart” explores invisible walls and the possibility of dismantling them for more honest connection with others.

DRINK SELECTION: Ryan’s taking good ol’ bubbly Champagne! Jake’s going with carbonation too, just in the form of a Tom Collins.

Malinda LaVelle’s Project Thrust-

“Urge”pushes extreme psychological states of desire and lust using food as an associative metaphor.

DRINK SELECTION: There’s no disagreement here. Straight whiskey. Bourbon’s fine too.

Liz Boubion-

“La Piñata” is a re-appropriated dance ritual depicting historical roots of the Piñata, sustainability, and mixed race identity. Part of a residency at The Off Center.

DRINK SELECTION: The boys are letting loose! Jake’s feeling floozy with a Long Island Ice Tea. Ryan ups him with a Sexual Alligator and recommends if you’ve never had one to google it and take a look at this beauty… Jager, Midori, Chambord and pineapple juice.

Fri, Jul 27, 8pm, $10-20, The Off Center, 848 Divisadero St, SF
