Dancers on a Line

Happy National Poetry Month from Stance on Dance!

POEM AND ILLUSTRATION BY LIZ BRENT

are these clothes really still not dry?

or is my skin too sensitive?

fingers find damp

nooks and crannies

in the cotton

or do I just want to

give every one

their moment in the sun?

including me?

do I just need an excuse

to turn exasperation into joy

and trip and bound

through the damp grass

again and again?

do I just love to see the

heather

charcoal

diamond

cream

navy

lined up

like dancers?

for the stage,

I would give them

green trousers

and yellow socks

to mimic the high green weeds

and yellow clover flowers

for their choreography,

they would bounce

and sway

softly

in the sunshine breeze
